Creative Engagement Photo Shoots

How adorable is this? Image via Tumblr

Over the last few years, engagement photo sessions have become very popular. The best among them are not formal or serious, but rather whimsical, creative, and unique. A great photographer will use the engagement photo shoot to capture something about the essence of the bride and groom. These are some wonderful engagement pictures to inspire couples in planning their own engagement photo sessions.

The great thing about engagement photos is that they can be anything you want. Some couples like having very elaborately staged scenes, such as this offbeat Alice in Wonderland theme shoot. The pictures in this instance are as much about the artistry as the couple themselves.

Including your pets in your engagement pictures can be a fun idea. If you feel like your dog is your “baby”, why not have him in your photos? Notice how the dogs are positioned so they can’t see “Mom and Dad” being affectionate – too funny.

Pictures involving retro styling are always popular. I love how this photo makes you wonder where they are going. Image via Pinterest.

Retro styling and props are wildly popular in engagement photo shoots. It can be a fun way to set a tone or tell a story. The retro flavor ties in nicely with the current trends in analog looking digital photography as well. This could be a very cute way to introduce a hip retro vibe into your wedding album, whether or not you intend for the main event to be vintage inspired. In addition to pictures taken in old row boats, vintage bicycles are also very popular props.

Another great idea for engagement pictures is to have the photo shoot in a place that is meaningful to you as a couple. So if you both love books, let your photographer snap shots of you stealing a kiss in the stacks at your local library. Or if you first bonded over sports, head on down to your home team’s stadium for your photo session. The pictures don’t have to be elaborately styled to be terrific.

Last but not least, be sure to get some pictures that show both of your faces well, and some that really show how you feel about one another. The overhead shot of the couple laying with their heads together has somehow become a standard picture for engagement shoots; it’s a little odd to me that it is so popular, yet it does have a certain charm. Part of what makes these pictures great is that the couple’s clothing and backdrop are nicely coordinated. Many engagement photos are pretty casual, but you still want to make sure that your clothing and jewelry look good with what your fiance is wearing. You will also notice that all of the brides-to-be have flawless hair and makeup, even in the informal “natural” pictures. After all, you are going to keep your engagement  pictures forever, so you want to look your best in them!
