What Not to Wear to a Wedding (And What to Wear Instead)

On the Silverland Jewelry blog we have previously discussed what to wear to a wedding, but I don’t think we have ever talked about what not to wear to a wedding. Sometimes knowing what to avoid is just as important as knowing what is appropriate. To be the guest that everyone talks about for her stylish good taste instead of her fashion faux pas, be sure to read this guide about wedding guest attire gone wrong before you go shopping.

Tasteful neckline, knee-skimming length, pretty color – great choice! Image credit: Michaela Louisa via www.motherofthebride.co.uk.

First and foremost, never wear something that will draw attention away from the bride! That means no super low-cut dresses or sky high skirts. Anything that is going to cause a scandal is strictly taboo. Remember that it is not your day to be in the spotlight, it is the bride’s. A wedding is not the time to wear that sexy little mini you got to wear on a date to a hot new club. A good rule of thumb: you should be able to bend over without spilling out the front of your dress or pulling down the skirt.

A laid back setting like a beach still calls for a great dress. Dress by Devon Baer. Image via Summer is a Verb.

The next rule is not to underdress. You can wear jeans the other 364 days of the year, but when you are a wedding guest, denim just won’t cut it. Even for the most casual outdoor weddings, the guys can wear khakis and the women can wear sundresses or simple skirts. And men should definitely wear collared shirts, even if it is only a polo. And please no sandals on men, ever.

This beaded Naeem Khan strapless gown would be amazing for a black tie ball. For an afternoon garden wedding, however, it would be a bit much, don’t you think? Image via Neiman Marcus.

Overdressing can be a problem too, if you are significantly fancier than the bride. This goes back to rule number one about not stealing the bride’s spotlight. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t dress nicely, just that your attire should fit the general formality of the wedding. In other words, a crystal encrusted ballgown at an afternoon garden reception is a no-no. Always match the style of your attire to the location and time of the wedding, and you should do just fine.

Hints of white in a wedding guest dress are okay, as long as the look is not at all bridal. Evergreen floral print dress by Oscar de la Renta. Image via Neiman Marcus.

Finally, please don’t wear anything that could be remotely considered bridal if you are not the bride. The white lace dress you got for your college graduation may indeed be beautiful, but you can’t wear it as a guest to a wedding. You could however, wear a pink lace dress, or even a fun 1950s inspired party dress with a colorful floral print on a white background. No one is going to mind if you wear a white cardigan over a yellow shift dress, but they will raise an eyebrow if you wear an all-white or all-ivory outfit.

Hooray for well dressed wedding guests! Image credit: Paul Scott Photography.

Dressing appropriately for weddings doesn’t have to be hard. Use your judgement, ask the sales consultants in stores, and find out what other guests are wearing. If any questions remain, you can always ask the bride or her mother what type of attire is expected. A well-dressed guest shows respect for the bride and groom, and adds to the festive spirit of the occasion.

Planning a Bridesmaids Luncheon

When you are a bride, it is easy to become accustomed to being celebrated and feted. Those are wonderful parts about being a bride, of course, but it is important that brides remember to appreciate all of those who put so much into making this time special. Your bridesmaids are a big part of your wedding planning – they shop with you, listen to you vent when your mother is driving you crazy, tie bows on wedding favors, and so much more. Take some time before your wedding to thank and honor your best friends with a special bridesmaids luncheon. Learn all about planning a little party for your attendants here.

Gather your attendants for a charming luncheon in their honor! Image credit: Nicole Ryan Photography via The Bridal Detective.

When To Have It: The ideal time for a bridesmaids luncheon is a couple of days before your wedding. For a Saturday wedding, this might mean a Thursday party. That tends to be a good time, because by then your out-of-town attendants should be arriving, but it won’t interfere with the rehearsal or rehearsal dinner the day before the wedding.

A French bistro is a lovely place to host the luncheon. Image credit: Lizzi Photography via Something Turquoise.

What Type of Party: Bridesmaid luncheons are often…luncheons, in other words, a fancy little lunch reception. Other options include brunches or afternoon teas. Because they are a genteel custom, they don’t tend to be held in the evening. Besides, you may want to keep dinner free to spend with other incoming out-of-town family and friends (and your fiance!).

Cute vintage inspired invitations via Zazzle.

Who Should Be Invited: The ladies involved in the wedding. In addition to the bride, bridesmaids, junior bridesmaids, and flower girls, the mothers and grandmothers of the bride and groom should be on the guest list. Feel free to extend the list to include special aunts if you want, but keep in mind that this is not a bridal shower, and it really should be a small gathering of the bride’s most immediate circle of women.

The luncheon is the ideal time to give your bridesmaids their gifts. Image credit: Nicole Ryan Photography via The Bridal Detective.

Who Hosts It: The bride! The point of the luncheon is to show appreciation for her bridal party and the other women who were most involved with the wedding. Sometimes the bride’s mother might help her host the event, but it is never hosted by a bridesmaid or in honor of the bride. This is an opportunity for the bride to make her friends feel appreciated, so it is a customary time to give out the bridesmaid gifts (Silverland Jewelry has many beautiful options!). The bridesmaids luncheon is not an occasion to give gifts to the bride.

Where to Host the Party: Any gathering place with charm. A little bistro or fancy restaurant, a hotel that serves high tea, or even your own living room would all be good options. There is no need to go crazy with decor, but some fresh flowers on the table will make the event feel more special. Show your bridesmaids how much you love and appreciate them!

Finding the Best Necklace for Your Wedding Gown’s Neckline

The perfect wedding dress deserves the perfect wedding accessories to enhance its look. Finding the right necklace to complement your gown’s neckline is a must. We had lots of fun pairing these gorgeous bridal gowns with some of our favorite Silverland Jewelry necklaces and bridal jewelry. Let us know which combination you like the best!

Kenneth Pool Spring 2014 strapless gown. Image credit: SYPhotography via One Wed. Silverland “Milan” cz jewelry set.

Strapless gowns can carry off a dramatic necklace. A striking necklace will not only bring out the best features of your gown, but it helps to fill in the area between the top of the gown and your face so you do not look too bare. That is especially important for close up photos, because without the right jewelry, the bride can look like she is not wearing anything! In this case, we picked up on the opulent silver beadwork on the Kenneth Pool strapless gown and paired it with an equally glamorous set of fabulous cz jewelry.

Scalloped neckline and cap sleeved Amsale gown. Image credit: Virgil Bunao. Silverland Jewelry “Audrey” Swarovski pearl and crystal choker.

First of all, isn’t this bride just the most adorable thing you have ever seen? And the scalloped lace neckline of her dress is just lovely – classic and feminine. A delicately shaped double strand pearl and crystal choker is a pretty update to the classic strand of pearls. The shape of the necklace echoes the lines of the gown beautifully. They look like they were made to go together.

A drop necklace is just the thing for a spaghetti strap gown. It is delicate like the straps of the dress, and the center drop is a wonderful complement to the dip in the center front of the wedding dress. Since the gown itself is so simple, a pretty pearl and crystal combination is ideal; it adds just a hint of sparkle, but will not steal the spotlight from the dress.

Jenny Packham Spring 2014 deep v-neck gown. Image via Martha Stewart Weddings. Silverland Jewelry “Christy” Swarovski teardrop pendant.

There is nothing like a long pendant to enhance a deep v-neckline. Because the fabric of this Jenny Packham gown is so soft, we chose a clear crystal teardrop pendant. It has presence, yet is also delicate in its own way. Truly, the shapes are marvelous together.

Naeem Khan Pre-Fall 2013 illusion neckline gown. Silverland Jewelry “Alexis” pearl stiletto earrings.

The resurgence in popularity of illusion neckline gowns has presented brides with a dilemma: what to do about the necklace? The fact is that most illusion necklines simply do not work well with anything around the neck, particularly if they have a banded border as this dress does. The solution? Skip the necklace and opt for a pair of long earrings instead. I always feel that bolder earrings are best when they are your only jewelry, so dare to choose something big! When you find the perfect wedding jewelry, it will make your gown even more beautiful.

Vibrant Summer Wedding Bouquets

Summertime is just around the corner! One of the best parts of summer is the vibrant flowers bursting with color. Capture the essence of the season with a vivid summer wedding bouquet.

Red, purple, yellow, green, and blue were used to create a festive bouquet with a Latin American flair. Floral design by Fionna Floral. Image credit: Volatile Photography via Wedding Chicks.

This bouquet is full of bright and bold colors. It was designed for a bride who wanted her wedding to have a Latin American flair in honor of her Mexican heritage. The classic dome shape of the floral arrangement and the simple white bouquet wrap give a unity and structure to the wild mixed hues.

A hot pink peony takes center stage in this lovely mixed color arrangement. Floral design: Fleur. Image credit: Sara Gray Photography via Elizabeth Anne Designs.

Bright red not your thing? How about a lovely bouquet of bright pastels? A hot pink peony and hints of bright purple and blue combine beautifully with peachy garden roses and silvery-green foliage. Think of it as a classic bouquet with a twist.

Lime green cymbidium orchids, orange and pink roses, hot pink carnations, green pompons and yellow alstromerias – wow! Image via Pinterest.

Citrus brights make this bouquet pop. Lime green, hot pink, orange, and yellow are spectacular together. What a fun bouquet this would be for an outdoor or tropical wedding!

The brightest of the bright! Floral design by Crazy Daisies.

There’s bright and then there is BRIGHT! This fantastic large nosegay is about as bright as you can get, and wow, is it ever fun. Fuchsia and lime green, orange and yellow – no color is too intense for this arrangement. What makes it work so well is that the flowers have similar textures and that the flowers are arranged in a neat round shape. It is not for the faint of heart, but boy is it spectacular!

Vibrant pink peonies, dahlias, and roses are accented with hints of yellow and deepest purple. The striped ribbon is a jaunty accent. Image credit: Erin Hearts Court via The Knot.

Longtime readers of the Silverland Jewelry blog know how much we adore nautical touches like this striped ribbon. Add in super bright pink peonies, hints of yellow, and a few deep purple flowers to anchor the arrangement, and the results are absolutely gorgeous. This bouquet would be a terrific choice for almost any style of summer wedding.

Keira Knightley Inspired Wedding Gowns

Whether she wore it again or not, all of us here at Silverland Jewelry loved Keira Knightley’s short wedding dress. The short tulle skirt was just delightful, and it would be a fantastic look for many brides. The general style of the dress is classic ’50s, so while the knee length is not the most traditional for a bridal gown, in all other ways, it is a timeless look. Since you can’t shop Keira’s closet, we looked around for similar styles that you might enjoy.

Keira Knightley on her wedding day (left) and possibly wearing the same dress at an earlier event. We say when you have a dress that pretty, why not wear it again? Image credits: X17 Online; Rex USA via People Magazine.

Keira wore a Chanel dress with a classic Chanel jacket for her wedding day. She wore the same dress at an earlier event styled with black tights and shoes. Don’t you love how she is so happy she is skipping at her wedding? Every bride should feel that way!

This tea length tulle wedding dress can be ordered with a variety of sash colors. Not only is it beautiful, but it is very affordable! Gown by Ouma on Etsy.

This pretty dress has a simple strapless satin bodice and a flirty tulle skirt. Choose any color sash that strikes your fancy. I would definitely choose more bridal shoes to ensure that the short dress still looks every bit like a wedding gown. A white peep toe pump would be darling, or choose fabulous silver sparkly shoes for something a little different.

Amsale Fall 2013 collection wedding gown. The illusion neckline is lovely for brides who don’t like strapless. Image via Martha Stewart Weddings.

This Amsale dress is pure loveliness. It has the most delicate sheer illusion neckline – just barely there. It is a wonderful choice for brides who are not comfortable with strapless gowns. The embroidery is so pretty, especially the way it  floats up onto the illusion. The tulle skirt looks as soft as a cloud.

A simple short organza dress from the Anne Bowen Spring 2014 collection. Image via Martha Stewart Weddings.

This short simple organza dress would be terrific for a beach wedding. The floaty organza sash has nice movement, and would be so pretty blowing in the breeze. A dress this simple is a great base for adding your own personality through your choice of accessories.

A soft sweetheart neckline and an organza sash are romantic details on this short lace dress by Ines Di Santo, Spring 2014. Image via Martha Stewart Weddings.

A sweetheart neckline and a subtle lace make this dress very romantic. The jeweled belt adds sophistication, while the rosette and sash add a dash of whimsy. I love how the shoes pick up the jeweling on the waist of the dress. I am also a big fan of the flowing streamers in the bouquet.

BHLDN Lively Chevrons organza dress.

This BHLDN wedding dress proves that a gown with a classic silhouette can still be very unique when it is made with a special fabric. The white-on-white chevron pattern is really beautiful, and the diagonal lines are also extremely flattering. This short wedding dress could be styled to be either retro or more modern, depending on your choice of details.

Have you considered wearing a short wedding dress? Why or why not?

Different Ways to Shop for Bridesmaid Dresses

At Silverland Jewelry, we strive to make shopping for your bridesmaid jewelry gifts a pleasant experience, but shopping for the bridesmaid dresses is often another story entirely. After all, what could be harder than finding one dress that looks good on a variety of different shapes, sizes, and styles? Or turning everyone loose to pick her own bridesmaid dress and hoping that the end result looks chic and eclectic, not disorganized and clashing. These days there are more ways than ever to undertake shopping for bridesmaid dresses. Learn about the different options so you can choose the one that will be the easiest and least stressful for you and your group of bridesmaids.

A full service bridal salon is the place to shop for classic special order bridesmaid dresses like these from Amsale. Image credit: Adam Barnes Fine Art Photography via Snippet & Ink.

Full Service Bridal Salon: This is the most traditional way to shop for bridesmaid dresses. Visit the same shop where you purchased your bridal gown, and let the highly experienced consultants help you select the dresses that will complement your  wedding dress and personal taste. The difficult parts about shopping at a full service salon can be higher prices, long custom order times, and that out-of-town attendants will have to order their dresses sight-unseen.

Bridal warehouses like David’s Bridal are a good option if you want to pick one color and fabric and let each bridesmaid pick a different dress. Image via Borrowed and Bleu.

Bridal Warehouse: When time and budget are a concern, brides often round up their whole group and head down to the closest bridal warehouse store. They typically have a large variety of styles on hand, and ready to take that day in many sizes. These stores also carry bridesmaid lines that allow you to pick one color and have each attendant order the dress silhouette she likes from that hue. The downsides to bridal warehouses are the lack of personal service and often lower quality.

Local Boutiques: Local boutiques are the place to shop for the most current styles and chic dresses that are not just for bridesmaids. They work well if you want each bridesmaid to pick her own unique dress or have a small bridal party that can shop together. Boutiques typically won’t carry multiple sizes in a single style and they may not be able to accommodate plus sized ladies, so keep that in mind if you prefer each woman to wear the same dress. Small stores are also likely to have strict return policies, so it is a good idea to have bridesmaids try on the dresses rather than order over the phone.

National Chain Stores: In recent years, it has become quite popular to shop for bridal parties at national retailers. Chains like J Crew and Ann Taylor have embraced this trend by offering ever-expanding collections designed especially for weddings. The convenience factor is a definite draw: the bride can pick a style, and each woman can visit her local store to try it on. It is also usually very easy to order multiple sizes online to try and return the extras. The disadvantage to shopping at a national chain store can be limited selection as compared to custom orders at traditional bridal salons. While they typically have a good size run available, chain stores may not offer plus sizes, which may be a factor.

Find top designers like Donna Morgan bridesmaid dresses at Weddington Way.

Online Bridesmaid Retailers: There is a growing trend of online retailers catering to weddings. Websites like Weddington Way offer assistance from personal stylists, virtual showrooms where you and your attendants can gather favorite dresses and vote, and carefully curated selections from top bridesmaid designers. Another option is Rent the Runway, a fun concept that allows customers to rent designer dresses for far less than purchasing them. That can be a good idea for brides whose taste far exceeds their bridesmaids’ budgets, particularly if she doesn’t expect each attendant to wear the same dress. The one obvious disadvantage to online-only shopping is that you have to take a leap of faith and order dresses that no one has had a chance to try on.

Brides, where did you end up shopping for your bridesmaid dresses? Was it a good experience – why or why not?

Equestrian Wedding Inspiration

Although I am not a fan of horse racing all year round, I faithfully watch the Kentucky Derby every year. Truly, I enjoy it for the style – the hats! the flowers! the mint juleps! – even more than for the race itself. Today being Derby day, it seemed like the perfect time to share some equestrian wedding inspiration with you. And they’re off!

How beautiful is this photo of a bride and groom with a horse? Styled shoot by Dot The I’s Events of Dubai via Bridal Musings. Image credit: Tasneem Photography.

Having horses at an equestrian theme wedding is a natural idea. And if you don’t have horses, consider a horsey-type venue for your reception. Barns, riding centers, and country estates are all excellent options.

“Elegant Equestrian” letterpress wedding invitation by hello! Lucky.

Regular readers of the Silverland Jewelry blog know that we love invitations that set the tone for the wedding to come.  These simple letterpress wedding invitations by hello! Lucky are perfect. They have the horses, a wreath motif, the bride and groom’s initials, and even the wedding date in a banner. What more could you ask for?

Love the wreath with the banner! And how cute is the photo of the rings on the horseshoes? Photo credit: Annie Edmonds via Green Wedding Shoes. Event planner: You & Me Events. Floral designer: The Little Branch.

The flowers are important at any wedding, but at a Kentucky Derby or equestrian theme wedding, they are a really big deal.  The vessels used in these designs are fantastic: vintage silver footed urns and golden trophy cups really drive home the theme. If you would like something more petite, red roses (the signature flower of the Derby) tightly bundled in silver julep cups are another fantastic vessel idea.  Wreaths are another key floral feature of the Derby, and they are always a favorite wedding detail. Don’t you love the wreath with the banner? And if you plan to ride in on a horse, how can you not drape it with a lush floral wreath, just like the winner of a thoroughbred race? All of these flowers are so gorgeous, it would be hard to choose just one favorite design!

Intertwining CZs give these classic pearl drop earrings an equestrian flair. Brasilla earrings by Silverland Jewelry.

Timeless elegance is lovely for an equestrian wedding. While lace gowns are always beautiful, personally I love the look of an unfussy wedding dress without a lot of embellishment for this wedding theme. Luxurious fabric artfully draped or pleated is all the classic bride needs. Oh, and maybe a pair of riding boots and equestrian inspired pearl drop earrings.

Lilly Pulitzer “Lacina” dress in “Just Add Mint” – the perfect bridesmaid dress for all of the mint julep lovers out there!

A monogrammed bow on a sunhat is the quintessential Derby accessory and would be fabulous for bridesmaids or wedding guests. Image via Pinterest.

As for the bridesmaid dresses, it is almost too easy. Classic preppy designers Vineyard Vines and Lilly Pulitzer both have Kentucky Derby themed dresses in their spring collections. Whether you choose a strapless gingham dress with horseshoe embroidery or a mint julep print shift with an open lace neckline, you can be sure that your bridesmaids will look fabulous. Large monogrammed hats are optional (but fabulous!). Whether you are a Kentuckian, a horse lover, or just adore classic style, an equestrian motif is an excellent theme for a wedding!

Seaside Wedding Cake Inspiration

Ah the seaside, we here at Silverland Jewelry are big fans of it! The lapping waves, the gentle breezes, the ocean air. And if a trip to the seashore if your favorite summer getaway too, you might well be planning a beach wedding for this summer. These are some beautiful ideas for wedding cakes inspired by the best of the seaside.  Enjoy.

White coral and a braided rope decorate a simple blue fondant cake. Image credit: Live View Studios via Wedding Chicks. Cake by Linacucina LLC.

This tiny cake packs a big style punch! Although it is only one tier, it is anything but basic. The brilliant blue fondant looks incredible accented by crisp white nautical elements. I love the braided rope around the base of the cake; and look – it even has a little seashell accent where the rope overlaps! A white coral cake topper and an array of shells on the cake display base complete the classic oceanside effect beautifully. And if your wedding calls for a larger cake, this design will easily translate to a three tier cake.

A starfish and monogram theme seaside wedding cake. Image credit: Rebecca at Millie Holloman Photography. Cake by Flower and Flower.

This delightful blue and white cake has some delightful beachy accents. The halo of starfish looks absolutely terrific, and it ties in nicely with the starfish and monogram cake topper. The braided trim around the base of the tiers is a subtle nod to the type of braided rope that is wrapped around the first cake.

Gorgeous sea glass mosaic wedding cake by Sugarland Bakery.

We are crazy for this unique sea glass mosaic wedding cake! It is very beachy, yet also completely unique. The color palette is absolutely gorgeous – wouldn’t you love to see the bridesmaids wearing sea glass dresses in all of the different shades of blue and green? Shells, starfish, and a darling seahorse enhance the seaside motif. If you wanted to go with more of a modern streamlined effect, the sea glass mosaic design would be equally incredible without the whimsical accents.

Love how the undulating wave design is reminiscent of this year’s hot chevron wedding trend. Cake by Elizabeth Hodes Custom Cakes & Sugar Art via Brides.

A soft color palette of pale blue, white, and sand gives this cake a lovely natural style. The mixture of textured seaside elements on each tier adds just enough detail to convey the theme. What really makes this cake a stand out is the undulating wave design. It is a great version of this year’s ultra-hot chevron motif. It is not always each to design a cake that fits a theme and also feels fresh and modern, but this one definitely hits the mark.

Ombre turquoise blue ruffles are a subtle nod to ocean waves. Image credit: Rebecca Joye. Cake by Sheryl Brousseau.

Ocean colors can be used to create a beautiful seaside effect without including any overtly nautical or beachy motifs. Case in point: this gorgeous ombre turquoise wedding cake. When done in watery shades of blue, the ruffles give a nod to ocean waves without being in-your-face about a theme. A single large white sugar flower is a classic bridal motif that looks great on any cake.

Soft shades of green and tropical orchids give this ocean inspired cake a unique style. Cake by Superfine Bakery via Flickr.

In case blue is not your favorite color, consider this pretty pale green ombre cake. The white coral and orchids are sophisticated and tropical. This would be a stunning cake for any summer wedding, especially one in the tropics. It just goes to show how you can take a theme that you like and make it unique by using your favorite colors.

Style Inspiration: Gold Wedding Details

Icy silver is not the only metallic that is popular on the wedding scene these days. Lately we have been seeing a lot more warm gold details incorporated into wedding designs. From wedding dresses with golden threads to DIY gold vases to rich table settings, gold is turning up all throughout weddings. These are some gorgeous gold wedding details to inspire your planning.

Oh my gosh – this cake! Golden cake image credit: You + We Photography via Wedding Chicks.

The texture and deep golden hue of this wedding cake are pure luxury. When a cake is this fabulous, a single white blossom (with a gold center, naturally) is all the decoration it needs. It is like haute couture for  the dessert table.

Simple Mason jars get a major style upgrade with gold spray paint and glitter. Image via Lilyshop.

Gold details are also fun for brides who are planning a DIY wedding. Mason jars are immensely popular for crafty brides, but they aren’t just for rustic wedding celebrations. The humble Mason jar gets an upscale makeover with gold spray paint and a glittery base. Classic white roses add to the elegance.

Gold combined with mint is a very chic color palette for 2013. Image credit: La Luz Photography via 100 Layer Cake. Event planner: Simply by Tamara Nicole.

I don’t know what it is about a gold pear, but it has always been a favorite detail of mine. The leaf shaped name tag pinned to the pear is a lovely little place card. Add the mint menu lettering and napkin, and the combination is endlessly stylish. All of us here at Silverland Jewelry have been crazy for mint green wedding details lately. This would be a stunning table setting for a formal spring or summer wedding reception.

Golden sequin chevron table linens – wow! Linens by La Tavola Fine Linen Rental.

How about this: gold chevron sequined table linens? Talk about making a statement! This is a spectacular style for the fashion forward bride who is not afraid to be bold. Soft blush flowers add a softness and romance to the dramatic tablecloth.

Spectacular gold embroidery decorates this lavish Reem Acra wedding gown. Image via Bridal Guide.

All over gold sparkle lights up this Sarah Seven wedding gown. Image credit: Ed Osborn Photography via Style Me Pretty. Event planning and floral design: Mimi Nicole Events.

If you are going to add special gold details to your wedding, don’t overlook your wedding gown. The Reem Acra gown at the top is an incredible example of luxurious embroidery. I love how the regal design flows down from the illusion neckline onto the rest of the gown. What a showstopper! The beautiful Sarah Seven dress is actually a bit more understated than the Reem Acra, despite being all-over gold sparkle. The flowing romantic style has a bit of a bohemian flair. If you prefer a traditional white wedding dress, bring in hints of gold with a jeweled golden belt or a golden crystal headpiece. You will be sure to shine on your wedding day!
